Healthy snacks are tasty and easy to make. Spice up some staples like nuts or eggs, make some homemade chips for a healthier choice than store-bought, heavily-processed chips, or keeps it simple with celery and peanut butter.
1. Spiced Walnuts
These have been a big hit with friends. After some of my initial “health food” experiments, they were skeptical, but after a taste, they reached for a handful. The great thing is that you know exactly what will be going into your body. I get a mix of raw nuts and sometimes I make them with just cashews. I love cashews.
2. Spicy Deviled Eggs
Eggs are loaded with vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. And as an added bonus they help you burn fat. Since they are so high in protein and protein uses more energy to digest, your body burns calories and fat while digesting. A great metabolism jumpstart to the day. Or, I sometimes bring a couple of boiled eggs to lunch or a late afternoon snack. Boil a few while you’re prepping meals and keep them handy in the fridge. Also great for salads.
3. Chickpea Dip
This was incredibly simple and a great snack. My sister used the dip with mini peppers (red, orange, yellow) and celery. I prefer a more carb-y snack and spread it on almond crackers. Very satisfying.
4. Oven-Baked Potato Chips
A few weeks ago when I started my nutrition class, I never thought potato chips would be on the menu, but my sister found a way! She made her own variations of cracked pepper and vinegar and Cajun spice chips. You can keep them in the fridge and throw a few in the toaster oven to crisp them up. Excellent for fending off snack attacks.
5. Celery and Peanut Butter
This is a favorite from my youth. My mom used to cut up pieces of celery and spread on some peanut butter. It was a special treat and a great after school snack. This one is pretty easy. Grab a piece of salary, a butter knife, and peanut butter (with no added sugar or other gunk) and spread it on. It’s also good with almond butter for a change of pace. A friend of mine adds raisins on top and calls it an Ant Log. 🙂
Happy, healthy snacking!
