After a stressful day, Viparita Karani, or Legs Up the Wall pose, is a great way to unwind. This restorative yoga pose awakens the parasympathetic nervous system, which lowers the heart rate and relaxes muscles. This pose can also be done just about anywhere, even in bed as you settle in for the night. It help you let go of the day and ease into a deep, refreshing slumber.
For added benefit, include on slow, deep breathing. Inhale through your nose, expand the chest, and fill the belly, then slowly and evenly release. Continue with this method, starting with a pace that feels natural for you. Then work towards an even count in and an even count out. For example, breath in for a count of four, then break out for a count of four. Your count of four. Then begin to extend the exhale so it lasts two to four counts longer than the inhale. This will further relax your mind and your body.
Instead of kicking back after a stressful day, lift up.
